Dear Evergreen Families,

At Evergreen School, we recognize that Truth and Reconciliation is an ongoing journey, one that calls us to learn, reflect, listen, and take meaningful action. As a school community, we are committed to creating opportunities for our students, staff, and families to deepen their understanding of Indigenous histories, perspectives, cultures, and languages, while building respectful relationships with one another and the communities around us.

This learning is woven into our work throughout the year and connects to our commitment to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action.

We are especially mindful of the importance of learning from local Indigenous perspectives and honouring the rich histories and knowledge of the Treaty 7 Nations and the Indigenous Peoples who have lived on and cared for these lands since time immemorial.

During Truth and Reconciliation Week (September 21–25) Evergreen students and staff will have opportunities to learn, reflect, ask questions, and consider how each of us can contribute to reconciliation.

We recognize that this learning is not limited to one week or one day. Throughout the school year, we will continue to explore Indigenous ways of knowing, stories, languages, histories, and contemporary perspectives through classroom learning, professional learning, and opportunities to connect with Indigenous community members and resources.  Please click below to see some of the ways students and staff engaged in this work throughout last school year.

September 30 is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day. It is a day to honour survivors of residential schools, remember the children who never returned home, recognize the ongoing impacts of residential schools, and reflect on our collective responsibility to advance reconciliation.

Families are invited to participate in community events in Moh’kins’tsis (Calgary) and continue their own learning and reflection.

The fifth annual National Day for Truth and Reconciliation & Orange Shirt Day community event will take place at The Confluence Historic Site on Wednesday, September 30, from 9–10:30 a.m. This gathering is a collaboration between the City of Calgary, Calgary Board of Education, Calgary Catholic School District, Calgary Police Service, Calgary Fire Department, and The Confluence.

There are also many opportunities throughout our community to learn, reflect, and take action:

At Evergreen, we believe that reconciliation is built through relationships, understanding, and action. Every word tells a story, and every opportunity to listen, learn, and reflect helps us build a school community where every voice, history, and identity is respected and valued.

Celebrating our Custodial Team: At Evergreen, we are incredibly grateful for the care and hard work of our custodial team, Mr. Frank our Facility Operator and Mr. Rey and Mr. Erick, our night cleaners.  Every day, they work behind the scenes to keep our school clean, safe, welcoming, and ready for learning.

From early mornings to the end of a busy school day, our custodial staff are constantly caring for our classrooms, hallways, washrooms, common spaces, and outdoor areas. Their work makes a difference in the experience of every student, staff member, and family who walks through our doors.

We know that keeping a school clean is no small task, especially in a school filled with more than 500 busy and energetic learners! 😊

Thank you to our amazing custodial team for all that you do for Evergreen. Your dedication, care, and pride in our school community are noticed and deeply appreciated. We are so fortunate to have you as part of our Evergreen family!

Physical Education Weekly Update: Our Terry Fox Run was a huge success on Monday! Students came together for a short assembly before heading out to the field to Try Like Terry. There were lots of smiles, goals being set and accomplished, laughter, and, most importantly, lots of fun!

A big thank you to the parents who came out to cheer the students on and help encourage them as they made their way around the track. Your support helped make the event a special one for our school community!

So far, we have raised $630 online toward our school goal of $1,200. Our cash donations will be counted shortly and added to our total.

If you would still like to make a donation, here is the link to our school fundraising page one more time:

Thank you so much for your support!

What’s Happening in PE?

The older grades have started our throwing and catching unit. This week, we introduced the basics of throwing, including the importance of stepping forward with the opposite foot. For example, when throwing with your right hand, you step forward with your left foot, and vice versa.

Our younger grades are continuing to work on personal space, gym expectations, and participating successfully in individual activities. We will also be moving into our throwing and catching unit soon!  Have a wonderful weekend! -Mrs. Paterson, Physical Education Teacher

Live from the Music Room:  Great stuff continues to happen in Music!  In order to ensure that students get the best musical learning, each class spent time this week reviewing expectations for behaviour and handling instruments.

Our students in Kindergarten and Grade 1 began learning about "Peter and the Wolf" by Sergei Prokofiev.  They're discovering how music helps tell a story, with violin music representing the character Peter, the flute for his friend the bird, an oboe for a friendly duck, and a bassoon for a cat trying to catch the bird.  We've just begun the story, so if you know the ending, please don't give it away!  These bright young minds are also learning the different directions (right, left, forward, backward etc.) through song and dance.

Our Grades 2 and 3 students continue to develop their xylophone-playing skills.  They're discovering how the songs "Twinkle Twinkle", "Baa Baa Black Sheep" and the "ABC" song are almost the same — and they're learning to play them all!  Other songs they've been learning on xylophone include "Hot Cross Buns" and "Mary Had a Little Lamb".

The Grade 4 classes created a chant with body movement and are singing the song "Charlie" by Willie Dunn for Orange Shirt Day on Tuesday.  They've spent some time rehearsing and sharpening up their performance.  They have also begun learning about the musical staff and notes on the scale.

We had the pleasure in Grade 5 of beginning ukulele this week, with kids learning the notes of the four strings, G - C - E - A, using the acronym "Gotta Catch 'Em All!"  Students first spent time learning to handle and hold the instrument properly.  They then learned to play a song plucking on the ukulele's open strings — without looking down at the strings or their fingers.  Our next step is to learn fingering to play other notes beyond the open strings. -Mr. Cohen, Music Teacher
