Dear Evergreen Families,
Our Grade 4 students have been exploring early settlements in Canada and the relationship between people and natural resources. Through their learning, they are developing an understanding of how the characteristics of a place and the resources available influence where and how communities are established.
To bring this learning to life, students explored the question: How do people decide where to settle and build a community? Working collaboratively, each group received a scenario card describing a particular settlement and used a variety of loose parts to bring their scenario to life. As they worked together to represent their settlement, students made decisions, shared ideas, solved problems, and explained their thinking, deepening their understanding of the factors that shape communities.

Photos of Loved Ones: Dear Evergreen Families,
As we prepare for our upcoming Remembrance Day assembly, hosted by our Grade 3 classes, we would like to honour the contributions of military members connected to our school community.
We are inviting families to share photos of loved ones who have served or are currently serving in the Canadian Armed Forces and other countries. This may include parents, grandparents, extended family members, or close family friends. If possible, please include details such as the time period, mission, or role they served in.
These photos will be compiled into a slideshow presentation that will be shared during our Remembrance Day assembly. It’s a meaningful way for our students to learn about and reflect on the courage and sacrifices made by those who have served their country.
Please send your photos to your child’s classroom teacher by Oct. 30th. You may:
- Email a scanned or digital copy of the photo
- Send in a hard copy, which we will scan and promptly return to you
Thank you for helping us create a powerful tribute to the brave individuals who have served their country. We look forward to sharing this special moment with our school community.

Lockdown Practice, Tuesday, October 20: The safety and well-being of our students, staff, and visitors are of the utmost importance at Evergreen School. As part of our ongoing commitment to school safety, we regularly practise emergency procedures so that everyone understands how to respond calmly and appropriately should an emergency occur.
In addition to our required fire evacuation drills, schools practice two lockdown drills each school year. Our first lockdown practice will take place on Tuesday, October 20, with support from the Calgary Police Service, who will be on site to assist with the practice.
Prior to the drill, teachers will review the procedures with students in an age-appropriate, calm, and reassuring manner. They will explain what students are expected to do, answer questions, and help students understand that this is a practice designed to help keep everyone safe. These conversations and preparations are approached with care taken to ensure students feel comfortable and supported.
During a lockdown practice, students and staff rehearse the procedures used to secure the school in the event of an emergency inside the building. As part of these procedures, visitors are not permitted to enter or leave the school while a lockdown is in progress.
We appreciate your support in helping your child understand that practicing emergency procedures is a normal and important part of keeping our school community safe. If your child has questions or concerns, please reassure them that these practices help students and staff become familiar with the steps to follow, should they ever be needed.
Thank you for your continued partnership in supporting a safe, caring, and welcoming environment for everyone at Evergreen School.
Physical Education Weekly Update: The week of October 26–29, Evergreen School is excited to welcome the Calgary Flames Classroom Crew for some fun-filled floor hockey activities during Physical Education!
Here is a little information about the program:
“The Calgary Flames Classroom Crew is a grassroots sports initiative for Southern Alberta schools, brought to you by the Calgary Flames Foundation.
The program provides a team of three to four trained instructors who visit schools, primarily in Calgary, to teach and play floor hockey and flag football with students in a Physical Education setting over a three- or four-day period.
The primary goal is to foster a love for sports, physical activity, and a healthy lifestyle.”
Your student should have brought home an OnSite Acknowledgement of Risk Form on Friday. Please sign and return the form to your student’s homeroom teacher by Thursday, October 22.
We are looking forward to this exciting opportunity for our students and can’t wait to get them out on the floor for some hockey fun!
Thank you! -Mrs. Paterson, Physical Education Teacher
Live from the Music Room: This week grade 3 students began musical preparation for hosting the Remembrance Day assembly in early November and were introduced to military drumming. Kindergarten classes created chants in which they rearranged the names of the different parts of the butterfly life cycle (pupa, larva, caterpillar. butterfly) into spoken rhythm. The Grade 1's who had Music finished watching Peter and the Wolf, while different Grade 2 classes either learned about Peter and the Wolf or performed songs as duos on the xylophone. Grade 4's continue learning to identify the notes of the C-major scale on the musical staff, while the Grade 5's have begun playing songs on ukulele, notably "Roar", in which they switch back and forth between two different chords. -Mr. Cohen, Music Teacher
