Dear Evergreen Families,
A big thank you to everyone who came out to our School Council Halloween Howl dance! Your spooky costumes, sweet moves, and ghoulish grins made the event a huge success. We hope you had as much fun as we did, and we loved seeing all the creativity and excitement on the dance floor! Special thanks to our School Council, the organizing committee and all the volunteers, who helped make this event possible. We couldn't have done it without you! Friday was buzzing with Halloween excitement! It was wonderful to see students and staff showcasing their creativity and school spirit through their costumes.

Understanding your Child's Literacy and Numeracy Screening Results: Students in grades 1 to 5 participated in literacy and numeracy screening between mid-September and early October, as required by Alberta Education and Childcare. To learn more about these assessments, please review the Understanding Universal Screeners resource. These screenings provide valuable information about students’ foundational literacy and numeracy skills and help identify where additional support may strengthen their learning. The screenings are not intended to measure how well students have learned the curriculum. Instead, they provide teachers with information to better understand each student’s foundational skills and plan appropriate supports. A printed copy of your child’s screening results should have come home on Thursday this past week in a sealed envelope in your child’s backpack. If you have not received it please contact your child’s teacher. For more information about literacy and numeracy screening and how to understand your child’s results, please visit Alberta Education and Childcare Literacy and Numeracy Screening website or refer to Parent Guide: Literacy and Numeracy Screenings. Physical Education Weekly Update: What an exciting week we’ve had with the Calgary Flames Classroom Crew! We had so much fun learning new floor hockey skills, building confidence and giving everything a try. The smiles, enthusiasm and determination were wonderful to see! We’ll keep the momentum going next week as we continue developing our floor hockey skills and enjoy some mini games. Our focus will be on encouraging one another, working together and demonstrating what it means to be a positive and supportive teammate. -Mrs. Paterson, Physical Education Teacher Live from the Music Room: Art and Music overlapped this week as kids put their creative imagination skills to test. Because the Alberta report card assessment for Music includes, “Listens and responds critically to music,” Grade 1 and Grade 2 students were challenged to listen to a famous piece of music and try to interpret the image or story behind it. Since music can be interpreted in many different ways, there is no single “correct” answer but rather limitless meaningful possibilities. Students each drew a picture with their own idea of the story the music was telling, and showed great creativity in the process! As it turns out, the students were listening to Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Flight of the Bumblebee”. Several students indeed deduced the composer’s idea and drew pictures with bees. A sampling of the kids’ amazing drawings is shared here. Grade 3’s and 4’s this week learned to sing the inspiring Bob Marley classic, “One Love”, and we discussed rhythm on the off-beat in reggae music. They also worked on Rhythm Drills, demonstrating their ability to read musical beats (quarter notes, eighth notes, half- and whole notes) and drum these rhythms on bucket drums. Grade 2’s practiced rhythm while playing “Pass the Beanbag” as they synchronized singing with game movements. Kindergarteners sang and danced in partners to a new class song, “We’re Kindergarten!” Meanwhile, our Grade 5 students this week added a new ukulele chord, F major, requiring fingering on two different strings. Using the C, A-minor and F chords they have learned, they were able to play along to the Fleetwood Mac hit “Rhiannon” , a song whose lyrics are about the legend of a Welsh witch - just in time for Hallowe’en! -Mr. Cohen, Music Teacher Volunteer Opportunities: Fun Lunches Various Dates (Many dates to choose from) Growing Smiles Fundraiser Delivery December 9th Bood Fair November 25 to December 4: Details to come We were excited to welcome student teachers from the Werklund School of Education to Evergreen School this week.
