Dear Evergreen Families,
Our Grade 2 students have been actively building their mathematical vocabulary as part of their learning about Shape and Space, aligned with the Alberta Grade 2 Mathematics Curriculum and our School Development Plan focus on strengthening linguistic vocabulary. As part of this work, students are exploring transformations by analyzing how shapes move and change position through slides (translations), flips (reflections), and turns (rotations). They are also developing an understanding of symmetry, including identifying and creating lines of symmetry, and recognizing when shapes remain the same size and shape.
Students are learning and applying mathematical vocabulary such as transformation, translation, slide, line of symmetry, ratio, enlargement, reduction, and reflection. To support deep and lasting learning, teachers are using a multi-sensory approach that brings vocabulary to life. Through songs, videos, and hands-on, movement-based activities, students are able to see, hear, and physically experience these concepts in meaningful ways. This approach strengthens comprehension and builds confidence as students begin to use precise mathematical language to describe and explain their thinking.

Our lacrosse residency wrapped up this week, with students putting their newly learned skills into action through game play. It was wonderful to see their confidence grow as they practiced teamwork, coordination, and game strategies. Students had a fantastic time and developed valuable gross motor and collaboration skills throughout the experience.

Alberta’s Protection of Privacy Act: When situations occur at school that involve more than one student, families often want to understand all of the details. While we always aim to be transparent and responsive, schools are legally required to protect the privacy of every student and family.
Under Alberta’s Protection of Privacy Act, and AR1061 Responsible Care and Security of Information, schools cannot share personal information about another student or their family. Personal information includes things such as a student’s name, circumstances, behaviour history, supports they receive, or any details related to their family situation. This legislation exists to ensure that all students and families have their personal information protected and handled respectfully.
Because of this law, school staff are not permitted to discuss another student’s situation or the steps being taken with that student, even when incidents involve multiple children. What we can do is speak about how we are supporting your child, the expectations for student behaviour, and the actions the school takes to maintain a safe and respectful learning environment.
We appreciate that families want reassurance that situations are addressed appropriately. Please know that when concerns arise, the school works directly with the students and families involved to resolve issues, provide appropriate support, and ensure the well-being of everyone in the school community.
Mental Health Week: Hats On! For Mental Health Day 2026 is on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, primarily in Alberta schools. Students and staff are encouraged to wear hats to raise awareness of the importance of mental health and to help remove the stigma associated with mental illness.
