Dear Evergreen Families,
The Grade 2 students proudly celebrated Earth Day with a wonderful assembly that highlighted the importance of caring for our planet through performances, art, poetry, music, dance, and thoughtful reflections about protecting the Earth for future generations. Students shared a meaningful land acknowledgement, performed the powerful poem Our Earth, Our Home (and Our Responsibility!), and reminded us that even small actions can make a big difference.
The assembly also featured performances of “Big Yellow Taxi” by Joni Mitchell and “Kiss the Sky” by Maren Morris, a video reading of Mother Earth: My Favourite Artist, by Carol Rose Goldeneagle and Hawlii Pichette and an energetic Earth-themed dance presentation to “Waka Waka” by Shakira. Students explored how plants, animals, water, air, and people are all connected, while encouraging everyone to reduce, reuse, recycle, and care for the world around us. The celebration ended with the whole school joining together in an Earth Day pledge, inspiring us all to continue protecting our beautiful planet every day of the year.
Earth Day Pledge
I will reduce, reuse, and recycle.
I will protect water, air and land.
I will help keep earth clean every day.
A heartfelt thank you to the Grade 2 teachers and Ms. Sousa for guiding our students. Thank you to all our families who supported them. Let’s carry the spirit of Earth Day into our daily lives and continue to make choices that protect and nurture our environment!
Our EES students had a wonderful time welcoming The Lady Buggy for an exciting in-school field trip all about insects and their habitats! Through hands-on activities and interactive learning, students explored the fascinating world of bugs in a fun and engaging way.
Students participated in a “Ladybug Picnic,” where they used puppets and pretend food to discover how different bugs eat different things. During “Build-a-Habitat,” students created diorama habitats using terrarium materials while learning about the importance of food, water, shelter, and space for living things.
One of the highlights of the day was meeting the “Big Beautiful Bugs!” Students were introduced to giant millipedes, tarantulas, and vinegaroons, and many bravely chose to touch and interact with these amazing creatures.
UPDATES AND INFORMATION
Cyber Safety Presentation: As technology and social media continue to play an increasing role in our children’s lives, it is important that students learn how to navigate the online world safely and responsibly. To support this learning, YouthLink Calgary, in partnership with the Calgary Police Youth Foundation, will be hosting a virtual presentation for all Evergreen families on Thursday, June 11, @ 6:00pm.
The internet and social media are powerful tools for connection, education, and communication. However, they can also present risks related to privacy, cyberbullying, and online safety. This presentation is designed to help families better understand these risks and provide them with practical strategies to protect their children while they use the internet and smart devices.
The session will explore topics such as:
- Social Media and Well-Being – understanding the benefits and challenges of social media and how it can impact mental health.
- Responsible Online Behaviour – learning strategies for positive digital interactions and responsible social media use.
- Protecting Personal Information – understanding privacy settings, terms of service, and how to keep personal information safe online.
- Cyberbullying Awareness – recognizing and responding to cyberbullying and helping create a respectful online environment.
- Online Risks and Scams – learning how to identify scams, phishing attempts, and other online threats.
The goal of this presentation is to empower parents and families to support their children with knowledge and tools to help them make safe and responsible choices online.
We kindly ask that you RSVP using the following link (Outreach Program Registration Form- Evergreen PTA – Fill out form) as we need 10 confirmed attendees for the session to run.
