Evergreen Weekly for September 25th
UPDATES AND INFORMATION
Orange Shirt Day: Students are invited to wear orange to school on Thursday, September 28th. Orange Shirt Day is held annually on Sept. 30. It is an opportunity for all people to come together in the spirit of reconciliation. Orange Shirt Day began in 2013 when residential school survivor Phyllis Webstad, shared how her orange shirt was taken away on her first day at a residential school. You can promote reconciliation in welcoming, caring, respectful, safe, and inclusive school communities by wearing an orange shirt.
Invite: National Day for Truth and Reconciliation & Orange Shirt Day Event - CBE students, staff and their families and friends are invited to join an event being hosted by the City of Calgary in partnership with the Calgary Board of Education and the Calgary Catholic School District. The third annual ceremonial opening is taking place on Sept. 30 from 9-10:30 a.m. at Fort Calgary (750 9th Ave SE). This year's gathering will include a smudge tent, in-person Indigenous speakers and performers, an aerial salute ceremony, and other events. The events will also include an intertribal dance demonstration featuring Indigenous students from the CBE and CCSD. Participants are encouraged to wear orange.
Following the YYC, CBE & CCSD event, all are invited to join the Pokaiks – The Children Commemorative Annual Walk and Gathering 2023. The walk will begin at 11 a.m. at City Hall (15-minute walk from Fort Calgary or 2-minute drive) and continue to Shaw Millenium Park (30-minute walk). The walk will be followed by drumming/dancing, Indigenous community speakers, artisan booths, and food sales.
Healthy Hunger Fun Lunch: Has making school lunches already lost its charm this school year? You’ll be happy to hear the Healthy Hunger Fun Lunch is set up and October orders are ready to be placed. Please find attached the brochure with step by step instructions on how to set up an account for your child and order them lunches. Evergreen School Council partners with Healthy Hunger to raise money for the school by hosting various “Fun Lunches” from popular restaurants in Calgary throughout the school year. You simply order your child a lunch from the menu options listed, mark the date on your calendar and rejoice knowing that for one day a month you are off the “lunch-making” hook. Lunches are delivered and distributed to your child at the school on set dates. Healthy Hunger Help

You will require both a Police Clearance Check (lasts 5 years) AND a current year Annual Volunteer Registration Form to be able to volunteer at Evergreen School. We are hoping to roll out digital or online forms through PowerSchool shortly. For now we are working with last years volunteer information, at least until October.
School Photo Day: Picture Day is on Tuesday, September 26th. After Picture Day, order pictures on mylifetouch.ca using your Portrait ID and Access Code, which can be found on your Picture Day order form that will be sent home in approximately a week to two weeks after picture day.
Use these tips to help your child get ready for a great-looking school portrait that you’ll treasure forever.
- Help your child pick out clothes and colours that look good on them. After all, your child is the star of the photo—not their shirt, so avoid slogans, logos, and big patterns. Small jewelry and accessories are fine but nothing too big or distracting. Make sure to check your flyer to see sample poses for your Picture Day. Some poses may show pants or skirts, so plan the complete outfit.
- Glasses are okay! Lifetouch photographers know all the tricks to reduce glare.
- Any hairstyle works for Picture Day. Schedule haircuts a few weeks ahead of time to allow hair to grow back a little, or you can go for a fresh-cut look.
- Keep kids relaxed and ready to be themselves. Smiles can look fake if they’re practiced ahead of time. Remember, smiles are like french fries—they’re better when they’re fresh.
- Don’t worry about “perfect”! That hair that always sticks up or a missing tooth shows your child just as they are right now—and you’ll enjoy looking back on that for years to come. On Picture Day, teachers and volunteers will help straighten collars and check posture. And, if you like, Lifetouch does have retouching options for scrapes and blemishes.
