Dear Evergreen Families,

Our grade 3 and 5 students have been learning from and with the land.  Grade 5 students embraced the beautiful weather and spent time learning outdoors in our community.  As part of their current unit on coordinate geometry, students were exploring how the environment and human settlement are connected. They used their mapping skills to create maps of our community, using what they noticed on their walks to learn more about where they live. This helped them get ready to explore why ancient civilizations developed in certain places. Students have also been learning from the land by using their senses to notice the sights, sounds, and smells of the changing seasons. Last week, they read The Other Way to Listen by Byrd Baylor and Peter Parnall, sparking rich discussions about the importance of sit spots and paying close attention to the world around us. Grade 3 students have been busy making scientific observations both inside the school and out in the natural environment. They are learning how to collect data using accurate and objective techniques, practicing careful measurement, and selecting the right tools for the job. By focusing on accuracy and objectivity students are developing the skills they need to become thoughtful, precise young scientists.

UPDATES AND INFORMATION

Orange Shirt Day: I am honored to be able to tell my story so that others may benefit and understand, and maybe other survivors will feel comfortable enough to share their stories. (Phyllis Webstad) Orange Shirt Day is on September 30 annually. It began in 2013 when residential school survivor Phyllis Webstad shared how her orange shirt was taken away on her first day at residential school. This story is an opportunity for students and staff to reflect on history, legacy and implications, to discuss stories of survival and strength and to share ways we can work together toward truth and reconciliation. It is also an opportunity to commit to commemorating the children who attended residential schools, recognizing their experiences, honoring them and sharing a collective commitment to ensure that every child matters and that each student is welcome, safe, respected and cared for in their learning community every day.  Grade 4 students will be hosting our Orange Shirt Day assembly on Friday, September 26th at 10:30am.  Families of grade 4 students only are invited to this assembly due to fire code maximum occupancy limits. We encourage all members of our school community to wear an orange shirt on this day.

Invite to Event | National Day for Truth & Reconciliation: All staff, students, families, and friends are invited to continue their learning and show their support on Tuesday, Sept. 30 from 9 - 10:30 a.m. at the Orange Shirt Day & National Day for Truth and Reconciliation event taking place at the Confluence Historic Site.
