Dear Evergreen Families,

Social–emotional learning (SEL) plays a vital role in helping children grow not only as students, but as caring, confident and capable individuals.  We have been creating opportunities for students to build meaningful connections by recognizing and sharing the things they love—such as favourite activities, interests, and personal strengths which helps them form authentic relationships with their peers. Students are also learning and practising respectful ways to greet one another, including using kind words, making eye contact, and acknowledging classmates by name to foster empathy and a welcoming, inclusive environment. Our buddy activities further strengthen these skills by giving students real-world opportunities to lead, learn, collaborate, and practise patience and cooperation with younger or older peers. By nurturing these skills early, we are helping students develop healthy habits and social tools that will support them throughout their lives in friendships, family relationships, future workplaces, and the broader community. See images below of SEL at Evergreen School in our EES, Grade 2 and Grade 1/5 buddy classes.

Dressing for the Weather:  Whether your child is bused, walks to school or is driven, Calgary’s unpredictable weather can see the temperature and weather conditions change drastically in a very short time. Please ensure your children are dressed appropriately to be outside every day whether it is cold, snowy, rainy or sunny.

Student safety is always our top priority and we are committed to working with families to create safe conditions for our students during extreme weather conditions.  With this in mind, we ask that parents review the CBE outside activities guidelines for cold weather Weather and Environmental Health.  We recognize the value of outdoor breaks such as recess and lunch during the school day, however, when the weather is cold, outdoor breaks may not be a viable option. When temperatures reach -20 Celsius or colder including the wind-chill factor, it is recommended that students be kept inside for recess or lunch breaks. The -20 Celsius guideline is comparable to other school jurisdictions in Alberta and across Canada. We will use the weather, as posted on the Evergreen School website as our guide in terms of making a decision for students to remain indoors.
