Dear Evergreen Families,

At each grade level, students explore a wide range of math topics, including numbers, shapes and measurement, patterns, and data. As they learn, students are encouraged to make connections between different math ideas and to see how math is used in everyday life. This helps them understand why math matters beyond the classroom.

Math is more than just numbers; it helps children learn how to think, reason, and solve problems. Students learn to explain their thinking, try different strategies, and persevere when challenges arise.  Our goal is to help students become engaged learners who are prepared to use their mathematical thinking in meaningful and practical ways.

Below are images of Grade 5 students exploring how different fractions can represent the same value (equivalent fractions) by using models, number lines, and symbols to compare and explain their thinking, as well as Grade 2 students building a strong understanding of place value by learning how numbers are composed of hundreds, tens, and ones through the use of models, drawings, and number lines to represent and break apart numbers.

Parent/Guardian Notification: Use of Educational Technology: At the Calgary Board of Education, we believe that thoughtfully chosen digital tools and resources enrich teaching and learning, support student engagement, and prepare students for success in an increasingly digital world. Technology allows students to collaborate, create, and access personalized learning opportunities in ways that extend beyond the classroom.

At the same time, we recognize the importance of protecting student personal information. All digital resources used in our schools must comply with the Protection of Privacy Act (POPA) and Administrative Regulation 1061: Responsible Care and Security of Information. These frameworks ensure that student data is collected, stored, and used responsibly.

Before any digital tool or application is introduced, it is carefully vetted by our district to confirm:

  • Its educational value for student learning.
  • Its compliance with the Alberta Protection of Privacy Act (POPA).
  • Alignment with district policies, including AR1061.

This means that families can be assured that the applications used in classrooms are appropriate for learning and meet our privacy and security standards. All schools review and post their specific Digital Citizenship plans annually on their website, developing and supporting students’ digital competencies, including: being respectful, informed, involved, balanced, being responsible and safe.

Please find attached a list of the websites and applications that may be used in your child’s classroom at Evergreen School.
