Evergreen Weekly February 5th 2024

Dear Evergreen Families,

Congratulations to Edie in grade 5 whose yearbook cover entry won the most votes by students and an honourable mention to Amy in grade 4 whose yearbook cover entry was also voted on by many students.  We are proud to have such amazing artists represent our school for the 2024-2025 school year. Please see their entries below.

UPDATES AND INFORMATION

Valentines: If your child is planning to write Valentines this year, we ask that they include all students in their class.  Classroom teachers will provide time for students to hand out Valentines on Wednesday, February 14th.  Valentines with pre-wrapped, store-bought candies will be permitted to be passed out.  We ask that families with students with allergies assess anything brought home for their child.

Due to allergies, students will not be allowed to pass out any candies/food items made from scratch at home. Classroom teachers will follow up with families regarding name lists.

Disrupted Learning Funding: Our school has received additional funding from Alberta Education for students who may require extra support in literacy and mathematics. Alberta Education Literacy and Numeracy assessment information has helped inform where support is most needed.

Support is scheduled to start the week of February 5th, 2024. Mrs. Stephanie Craig will be joining the Evergreen staff in a part-time teaching capacity to provide targeted intervention for those students identified through the assessment as requiring additional support.   We are thrilled that Mrs. Craig was able to assume this role again this year due to the excellent work she did with our students last school year in the same capacity.  Please join me in welcoming Mrs. Craig to our Evergreen School Community.

Parent Advisory Council and School Council Meetings:   Please join us for our Parent Advisory Council Meeting (@5:30pm) and School Council meetings (@6:00pm) this Wednesday, February 7th in the Learning Commons.  All parents/guardians are welcome to join.

Our Parent Advisory Council a group of parents, incorporated under the Societies Act  for the purpose of raising funds for the school. They also have a voice and provide feedback in terms of how these funds are spent at the school level.  We are thankful for the following opportunities sponsored by our PAC this school year:

  • Bussing for field trips which reduces the overall cost to families
  • Jeff Stockton residency
  • Sound Kreations residency
  • Layers of Literacy professional learning partnership
  • Literacy and mathematics resources for use by students in classrooms
  • New books for our Learning Commons

Under the Education Act, a School Council is a collective association designed to advise the principal and the CBE Board of Trustees on matters related to the school. School councils have legislated advisory. They are different from a Parent Advisory Council, whose main function is to raise funds for the school.  The following is shared at a School Council meeting:

  • Principal’s report – where important school-wide information is shared
  • Teacher’s Report – where artifacts and images of learning from the month are shared Kindergarten through grade 5
  • Ideas for bringing the school community together such as the Halloween Howl and Parent Trivia Night
  • Fundraising activities
  • Issues and topics in education or at Evergreen School
