There’s an exciting buzz in the air as students bring in more and more boxes of mac and cheese to create a domino topple run, all while giving back to the community by donating to the Calgary Food Bank. The last day to bring in boxes is March 19th, with the Domino Run set to topple on March 20th. Grade 3 students have been collaborating to design the epic run, exploring key math concepts like size, measurement, height, length, weight, and momentum. Watching the topple come to life brings these concepts together, connecting them to real-world applications while supporting the community.
"All the boxes look pretty much the same, but they aren’t. When we looked closely, the heights and lengths are a little different. They also have different weights, in grams, but most feel almost the same.”
- Grade 3 student quote
I challenged the students to figure out a way to incorporate the square boxes into the run
“We can’t use the heavier boxes in the path because they fall slower, and you need more momentum to make sure they fall. We think a bridge would be a good way to use them."
- Grade 3 student quote
Once the run is complete, the mac and cheese boxes will be donated, helping to provide meals to those in need and fostering a sense of citizenship and kindness. It’s a project that’s not only educational but also impactful—and, of course, a lot of fun!
Sincerely,
