This week, students at Evergreen School learned about the Métis Nation, an Indigenous group with a unique blend of Indigenous and European (mainly French) cultural, historical, and linguistic traditions. They explored Métis art, music, dance, language, and values, emphasizing respect for cultural diversity and the importance of preserving Indigenous cultures. As part of our Evergreen School Commitment to Truth and Reconciliation, we focus on integrating Indigenous knowledges, languages, and teaching methods into our classrooms, including inviting Indigenous community members to share their knowledge.
Learning about Métis history and contributions helps students understand the challenges Métis communities face, both past and present. Recognizing Métis Week promotes healing by addressing historical injustices and emphasizing the importance of inclusivity. It also highlights the unique cultures, languages, and histories of all Indigenous peoples, and their significant contributions to the country.
Students engaged with Métis authors' books, traditional folktales, and legends, and created art projects inspired by the Métis sash, the infinity flag, and Métis beadwork.
Sincerely,
