Oral language and fluency are essential components of structured literacy, especially for students in division 2, as they strengthen comprehension, vocabulary, and expressive communication. In our learning with Mrs. Donna from Play Perspective, students explored First Nations legends about constellations, deepening their understanding of storytelling traditions and cultural perspectives. They then created their own constellation stories, using loose parts to design visual scenes that brought their narratives to life. By capturing photos of their creations and sharing their stories orally, they practiced clear expression, sequencing, and storytelling skills—all of which support reading and writing development. This hands-on, language-rich experience helped build confidence, creativity, and a deeper connection to both oral traditions and structured literacy learning for students.
