Our grade 3 and 5 students have been learning from and with the land.  Grade 5 students embraced the beautiful weather and spent time learning outdoors in our community.  As part of their current unit on coordinate geometry, students were exploring how the environment and human settlement are connected. They used their mapping skills to create maps of our community, using what they noticed on their walks to learn more about where they live. This helped them get ready to explore why ancient civilizations developed in certain places. Students have also been learning from the land by using their senses to notice the sights, sounds, and smells of the changing seasons. Last week, they read The Other Way to Listen by Byrd Baylor and Peter Parnall, sparking rich discussions about the importance of sit spots and paying close attention to the world around us.

Grade 3 students have been busy making scientific observations both inside the school and out in the natural environment. They are learning how to collect data using accurate and objective techniques, practicing careful measurement, and selecting the right tools for the job. By focusing on accuracy and objectivity students are developing the skills they need to become thoughtful, precise young scientists.
