Our Grade 5 students have been diving into the exciting world of coding and robotics using VEX IQ kits and Blockly, a visual block-based programming language. As part of their science curriculum, students have been exploring computational thinking and design processes to create, test, and refine code that brings their robots to life and program them through a course with obstacles.
Through hands-on activities, students are learning how to design algorithms, incorporate loops, and program their robots to complete specific tasks. Using Blockly’s intuitive drag-and-drop coding system, they are developing logical reasoning and problem-solving skills while seeing immediate results from their efforts.
These experiences support key curriculum outcomes, including the creation of computational artifacts, translating code into machine actions, and improving design through multiple iterations. Most importantly, students are developing teamwork, creativity, and perseverance as they collaborate to build, test, and improve their robotic creations.
We’re proud of our Grade 5 engineers and innovators as they code with purpose and design with curiosity! Check out a video below of their efforts. Thanks to our School Council and Parent Advisory Council for our VEX IQ kits!
Sincerely,
