Our Grade 3 students engaged in a creative and hands-on learning experience that brought together Science, Art, and Global Connections. As part of their study of Matter, students explored how natural materials, like sheep’s wool, can be processed and transformed into new materials such as textiles and art. They learned about the traditional use of llama wool by Indigenous peoples in Peru and other cultures around the world to create beautiful and functional items.

Students investigated how the Earth’s surface changes over time, and how slow and fast geological processes can reveal hidden wonders like geodes—rocks that contain sparkling minerals inside. Inspired by this, students used wet felting techniques to create their own felted geodes. By agitating natural wool fibres with water and soap, they caused the wool's barbs to interlock, forming colourful spheres that mimicked the layers and hidden beauty of real geodes.

This rich, cross-curricular project allowed students to connect scientific concepts with artistic expression and cultural understanding—demonstrating how learning can be both meaningful and memorable.
