Reflecting on Our Journey Toward Truth and Reconciliation at Evergreen School in the 2024-2025 School-Year
In recognition of National Indigenous Peoples Day and in alignment with the CBE Education Plan, Evergreen School reaffirmed its commitment to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Call to Action 62.3, which calls on educators to utilize Indigenous knowledges, languages, and teaching methods in classrooms.
Throughout the 2024–2025 school year, our school community focused on deepening and making explicit connections to the teachings of Indigenous Elders and Knowledge Keepers. By inviting members of Indigenous communities into our school and classrooms, students and staff engaged in meaningful learning experiences grounded in oral storytelling, land-based learning, and cultural wisdom. Teachers were intentional in helping students name and reflect on the values, perspectives, and teachings they encountered.
The impact of this work was significant:
- Students developed a greater understanding and respect for Indigenous cultures and worldviews. Many were able to speak to the teachings they received and recognize how these teachings influence identity, community, and relationships with the land.
- Staff deepened their own professional learning by co-planning with Indigenous community members and embedding Indigenous perspectives in curriculum in more authentic and respectful ways.
- Parents and families expressed appreciation for the opportunities their children had to learn directly from Elders and Knowledge Keepers. These experiences sparked conversations at home and nurtured a greater awareness of the importance of reconciliation.
